As spring prepares to, well, spring, it’s time to head out into the garden with a delicious punch in hand.
After a long, cold winter, spring is finally beginning to unfurl. There’s no better way to celebrate the warmer weather than inviting your pals around for a garden party. And there’s no such thing as a garden party without punch. Here are three easy-to-make punches that’ll please everyone.
For a party of 20 or so, punch can be the perfect solution. This Xalapa Punch is essentially an iced tea – with a real kick. First, you’ll need about a litre of strong black tea ,which of course, you’ll need to make over the stove so it’ll brew. Grate some orange peel into the pot, stir in some sugar, and then leave the liquid to cool.
Once it has cooled a bit, pour in some rum, calvados and dry red wine in about 500-mililitre portions. Add a large block of ice and allow it to chill for a few hours and pour over some Schweppes Soda and float some slices of lemon and orange on top before serving.
Everyone loves a bootlegger, particularly one with Pimms. To make your Prohibition Punch, take a large bowl and combine a good splash of Hendrick’s Gin, an even better splash of Pimm’s and a few splashes of Angostura bitters. Squeeze over the juice of a lime and pour in a bottle of Schweppes Ginger Ale. Finally, add sliced cucumber, strawberries and chopped pears to garnish and go crazy.
An assured crowd pleaser, Champagne Punch will go down an absolute treat. First, pour two bottles of chilled sparkling wine into a big bowl. Then pour in another two bottles of cold Schweppes Lemonade. Add half a litre of vodka and half a litre of Malibu. Finely slice five limes, add some frozen raspberries and passionfruit pulp.
